Decided to get a new thread rolling for the new ATC that I started working on. The old ATC thread was getting a bit long and it's hard to wade thru all the info. This tool changer will, as you've guessed, have 16 tools using the same holders as the last one, my versions or the Tormach tool holders. It should be compatible with any mill, X2 or larger, that can use a power drawbar to open/close a collet. The X2 may need to be bolted down to keep from tipping over. Unlike the last simple ATC, this toolrack won't be attached to the x,y table at all. It doesn't matter which side the rack is mounted to though I'm putting mine on the right side since there is more room in the flood coolant enclosure over there. I've already edited the code in the M6Start macro from Mach 3 to get everything moving just like I want. Tests show it working great. Thought of one more thing, going to add some code to activate/deactivate a solenoid to open/close a door to keep chips out. Tool changes should be a bit quicker than the last one too. There is much less Z axis travel for this one and my Z is the slowest axis. The total cost is ballparked around $300 since I already have the Power Drawbar, C6 and C10 boards and Tool holders.

Working on a screen set for Mach 3 to go along with the 16T ATC. Using Screen 4 to modify the old 1024.set. Pretty simple to use once you get into it. There's a video tutorial here. Want to have the functions I use most on the main page instead of jumping back and forth. I have lots of extra buttons I can assign on the new mill console.

Played around with the new lathe getting it all set up, now that it's ready to rock, it's time to get back to the ATC. Finished up the tool rack wedges today, just need to make the spokes and the rack itself will be done.
Check out the 16T ATC Toolrack Wedge Milling video at Youtube. Video shows the wedge milling, 3/8 HSS endmill @ 3500 RPM, .075 DOC, 15 IPM.Hoss

Getting closer! Bolted nearly everything together and temporarily clamped it to the mill to test the axis' movements. Setup the Motor Tuning in Mach 3 and it seems to work pretty well. Just have to make a couple more mounting brackets to attach it to the column. This thing would easily tip over a stock X2 not bolted down, especially full of tools. I've drawn up a few more types and sizes that would probably suit the X2 better, still has 8 or 12 tools though. Started drawing a version that doesn't slide away but is limited to 8 tools. More than one way to skin a cat. HossCheck out the Video

Thanks pinciui!
Busy now working on a redesign of the ATC. Wasn't happy with the size of the slide mechanism so a rework is needed. Stay tuned. Hoss

The slide mechanism displeased me so into the crapper it went. Too big and bulky. After a couple weeks redesigning and fabricating, I have a swing arm to bring the toolrack into position. A preliminary mockup looks good so I'll finish the odds and ends like cutting the threads on the pivot rod. The base will bolt onto the side of the column. (It's clamped to the top of the table for demonstration purposes only) More next weekend. Check out the video. Hoss

WOW what a great set up. Would you mind if i ask you a question. I'm just getting into cnc with the same machine you started out with. You have a great site filled with great projects. I am just getting into CNC. I'm waiting for the parts to convert my machine witch is the same one you started with. I ordered CNC fusion mounts kit #4 with ball screws. For the stepper and the controller i'm ordering. Heres the write up of the plug and use kit. Can you let me know if these are good componits. The steppers are 385 oz-in motors. If you can point me i the right direction that would be great. I don't have alot of $$$$ to waste on something when there something out there better. Here's my email if you can let me know any info you can that would be great. See below for controller write up. Thanks

Hey Mike, Looks like a real good set of components. I take it it's from Keling. They are great and super fast with their shipping. Hoss

Man, over 6 months on this but now we have a tool change! Too busy with other stuff. This video shows the first tests. I'll edit the macro tomorrow and have the B, X and Y all move at the same time to speed it up. The wiring needs tidying too. Think I'll put the toolholders back in the lathe and give them all sharper angles like the Tormach tools from LMS. Should make them slide in a little better. Gonna get this done and start cranking out some production pieces. Later, Hoss
