Howdy, folks, I've been reading Hoss's stuff for a year now and am trying to use my mini-mill and mini-lathe to emulate his projects. Since I have no machinist background, it's quite the learning curve. My current problem is this: I'm trying to make the z-axis upper and lower flanges from the cylindrical chunk o' steel that Hoss puts in his kit of stuff for the CNC conversion. I'm using my mini-mill and this cutoff blade. I've fiddled with the height and feel it is spot on, but all I've managed to do is put a shallow groove in the steel and flatten the tip of the cutoff blade. Any suggestions from anyone?

Every homeshop could use a horizontal bandsaw. Makes cutting up stock a breeze. I picked one up at Tractor Supply for $180 and you can find similar ones at Harbor Freight, Sears even Home Depot I believe. Hoss

Thanks for the advice, Hoss. Unfortunately, I won't have space for the bandsaw until moving next year (I currently live in an apartment - the mill and lathe want a real shop!), so I'm stuck with what I've got for a bit longer.
In addition to this specific goal, I *am* curious as to how I can cut off steel like that used for your flange while using the lathe. I'm really scratching my head here. Is this due to my non-mastery of a technique, or can it even be done with the cutoff blade I am using? Dave

Those parting tools work on the lathe, just set the rpm below 200, feed in very slow and use lots of oil. Another alternative bandsaw for the apartment might be this one. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=42707I have one of these too, works well. Another option would be to pick up this. Hoss

I actually have one of these, same model. I've been surprised at how well it works. Quote:Another option would be to pick up this. Hoss Hahah, what are you, some kinda capitalist?!? Doncha know that's not 'cool' anymore, thus satheth Da Prez? Part of the reason I posted this question on your forum is as a last ditch to help me figure out how to part this steel, so I'll know whether or not I need to order your axis mount when I order my 16T Tool Changer DVD and machined ballscrews. Thanks for the tips on feed and rpm, I'll regrind the blade and try again. Dave
