Hey all,

I am in the middle of converting my X2 to CNC with my daughter. I am thinking of putting the DRO scales and readout on my machine, but realized it maybe a redundant device. I know that it will provide a second method of measuring accuracy on the mill, but once it is dialed in and backlash compensated for, is it a daily used thing? If I could loop it back into Mach3 to run "closed loop" on the motors it would be great, but I don't think that is possible at the moment with Mach3.

Anyway, I wanted to see what the thoughts of more learned and experienced people than myself were. Thanks for the input in advance.

The DRO's wont last long, once you calibrate Mach 3, it's DRO's will the ones you'll use.
My DRO has been sitting in a box for 3 years. Folks have tried to feedback DRO's to mach but without success. The YADRO is an interface that outputs a DRO to the PC that can read from the scales but it's standalone.

Thanks Hoss,

I am in on the DRO-550 group buy. I will get the kit and assemble it. Can't beat the board and components for $90 shipped. I will keep it around for a lathe or knee mill/RF45 project.

thats exactly what I planned, first it was going on the lathe but now it's ready to go on the ZX45, just got a new 24" scale for it.

How is that ZX45 treating you? I still have a long way to go before I upgrade my mill, but I have been following your posts. It looks like a nice bit of machinery.

Thanks for linking to the MIT Techshop videos, those are fantastic. I am learning so much by going over them. It is a true treasure on the net.

While I have you, one of the first projects I want to do is the ATC3. But I realized I probably need to build a 4th axis/lathe table first. What are your thoughts, and does the ATC 16 tool DVD contain all the info on building the smaller version now?

Thanks,
John

Very happy with the ZX45, won't ever need to get a bigger mill than this, couldn't anyhow unless I move.
Yeah if you want to make the big timing pulleys you'll need a 4thg axis.
The 16T ATC DVD has ALL the ATC projects now, packed full.
