Hoss, I hope to be ordering an 8x12 lathe from HF soon. I have been trying to determine what tools or a kit to get started with. I have been looking at this starter kit from LMS: http://www.littlemachineshop.com/products/product_view.php?ProductID=3534&category=I am also looking at this toolpost from LMS: http://www.littlemachineshop.com/products/product_view.php?ProductID=2280&category=-419988835From what I have read on cnczone, the AXA is suposed to be a better toolpost? With that, I'd have to add all the goodies that are included with the A2Z QCTP kit. Some have also sugested this QCTP from lathemaster: http://www.lathemaster.com/QUICK%20CHANGE%20TOOL%20POST%20SET.htmAgain, add the goodies... If it is a good idea to spend the dough right off the bat and put together a kit rather than buy the cheaper all-in-one solution, I'm all for that. If the simple starter kit is sufficient, perhaps save some bucks..?? Trying to avoid penny smart, pound foolish... Second question, can you suggest an indexable tool holder and diamond cutter for machining ball-screws as seen in your videos? Any particular size? Thanks! -4ist

The first one, the LMS a2z looks like the best deal. those little tool holders are good for detail work but get one of these for the bigger jobs like ballscrews. http://www.wttool.com/product-exec/product_id/40086/nm/90_Turning_Facing_Tools_Micro_100_with these inserts http://www.wttool.com/product-exec/product_id/31685/nm/CCMT_1A_2A_Carbide_Inserts_Valenite_The holders are cheaper than what I actually use but look pretty good. Good inserts. I cut down a real good Kennametal tool holder to fit the AXA but these are good to go. Hoss

Thanks for the advice!
I forgot to ask... What would you suggeset for threading? Just get or make a 60 degree threading bit or get an indexable tool?
And where do you get that ceramic cutter that's in the video?
Thanks, -4ist

These are some CCMT Ceramic inserts from MSCDirect. http://www1.mscdirect.com/CGI/NNSRIT?PMPXNO=17697125&PMT4NO=74207844The insert type threading tools are very brittle a PITA when they break and ruin a part. Either grind your own from a blank tool steel or get this one like i have from Aloris, it'll last forever. http://www1.mscdirect.com/CGI/NNSRIT?PMPXNO=1794832&PMT4NO=74208505
