Hoss,

You are the best one to answer this one I think...
Seems that many are building an X2 with the G540 with a limited amount of inputs. If you figure one for the limit/home switches, one for the tool probe, one for spindle speed sensor, and one extra...
So if you were building an 'entry level' control panel, what would you use or buttons would yo include? Probably start with a joystick or some usb device for input. with only one input left for the G540, not enough pins left for an MPG. Perhaps a mouse thumbwheel? Dunno if that would work...

Any suggestion?
Thanks! -4ist

the control panel doesn't have to use any inputs on the g540 other than an E-stop.
Jog buttons and such can be USB controlled using Keygrabber.

Absolutely. And from the G540 manual P.3 it looks like the E-stop doesen't even require one of the four available inputs. I think in one of the videos you indicate that the MPG eliminates the need for a joystick. So if you can't have an MPG, what buttons would you have? Would you use jog buttons with a rate knob in lieu of a joystick? What other frequently used buttons that could be controlled through keygrabber would you include? I guess I'm wondering what buttons that you have added that you don't use much or buttons that you would use but haven't added yet.
Thanks! -4ist

I rarely used the joystick at all, it's good for rapiding both axis together to get to an area but then the jog buttons are used.
I use the jog buttons a lot, the start button, stop button (doesn't reset everything like estop,
just stops the program), feedrate + and - and reset, jog rate + and -, and the flood and spindle on/off.
Those are the most used.
